Contest 3 - Winner's Interview - Hélène Cloua

Please tell us about your journey as an artist.

After an intense but different professional life where creativity still had its place, I decided in 2010 to devote myself fully to creation.

A self-taught painter, after courses in Latin calligraphy and illumination, my passion for painting led me into a world where dreams and the imaginary come together. My artistic universe is characterised by a fluid and elegant dynamics. As I meet new people, travel around Asia and share my moods, the flood of emotions and feelings that overwhelm me is set in motion, allowing my joy of creating and sharing to shine through on canvas.

More inclined to express my feelings and sentiments through the creation of paintings in which femininity and calligraphy take pride of place, I also like to convey my states of mind and give strength to my works by using materials such as cement, ceramics, stone, gauze, gold leaf etc. that leave the imprint of a deep feeling.

What is your medium and why did you choose it?

For my creations on cotton or linen canvas, I use different mediums (oil, acrylic, textured mediums and different materials) to give power and intensity to my canvas. The art of gesture and movement then takes on its full meaning and leaves room for the personal sensitivity of each individual.

My ‘rising sun’ creation is done in oil with textured mediums to give strength and luminosity to this sun that rises majestically and illuminates all that surrounds it.

What was the inspiration behind this work?

When abstraction meets the sun...  Each brushstroke, each colour, is an expression of energy, freedom, feelings and sensations. It's an act of letting go that reflects my experience and is marked by a deep feeling. This work pays tribute to the strength and luminosity of the sun, which rises majestically and illuminates everything around it.

Who is your favourite artist? Why?

For me, the fundamental criterion for a work of art is the emotion it will give me, whatever the painter.

So, strictly speaking, I don't have any favourite painters, but if I had to choose one or more painters, it would be those from the Art Nouveau period, notably Klimt and Mucha, whose style is a cross between the figurative and the ornamental, where femininity is sublimated.
